The world is living through a period of population ageing that is "without parallel in the history of humanity," according to the UN's population division. This process is a result of the combined effects of declining fertility and reducing mortality rates. Although population ageing affects nearly all countries, the trend is much stronger in developed countries. Globally, the number of those aged 60 and above is expected to exceed the number of children (those under 15) for the first time in 2045.
